Adrian confirms Liverpool contract 'talks' and what could happen next

Adrian has opened up on his contract situation at Liverpool, and what the effect of being demoted to third choice goalkeeper has done to his confidence.

The Spaniard is currently in his second season at Anfield, with his current deal with the Reds due to expire at the end of the season.

The 34-year-old started his career on Merseyside filling in for the injured Alisson Becker, featuring in several important wins on the way to winning the Premier League title as well as the Super Cup.

With his contract due to expire in a few weeks, Adrian says he and the club are in talks but nothing has been decided over whether or not he will be offered an extension.

“I have just signed a contract and I am happy in Liverpool. Since I arrived they welcomed me with open arms,” Adrian told Spanish news outlet Marca.

He added: “It has been a step forward in my career, not only for getting titles but for being in a great team and training daily with the best in the world.

“I am happy here. It is true that this second season personally has been quite irregular.

“The club has made me see that they are happy with me. We are in talks, but nothing is clear yet.

“It will have to be solved between now and the end of the season. The most important thing is to remain happy and enjoy this profession.

“I would like to continue here, but there are quite a few points to clarify and make the best decision for all parties.”

Adrian was dropped in favour of Caiomhin Kelleher when Alisson got injured in November, making him third choice stopper at Anfield.

The Spaniard did play again when Liverpool faced Sheffield United in February, when Alisson was on compassionate leave, which was only his sixth outing of the campaign.

He has now opened up being demoted in the goalkeeping pecking order, and what effect it has had on his confidence.

“The coach put Kelleher ahead of me in December, but it’s part of our job. We are three good goalkeepers,” Adrian said.

“Physically I feel good, like a bull, and I face the final stretch of the course with the greatest enthusiasm.”
