Adrian Chiarella‘s Leviticus is Australia’s latest queer horror darling. From the storyline to the performances to the soundtrack, it’s truly a modern-day scream queen’s dream. However, one thing that has left me yearning is the true identity, the true ~form~ of the Entity.
This article contains Leviticus spoilers. You’ve been warned.
Leviticus, starring Talk To Me‘s Joe Bird, Australian Hollywood star Mia Wasikowska and rising icon Stacy Clausen, follows two teenage boys and their blossoming connection.
Unfortunately, their community opposes their bond, resulting in a ritual that unleashes a malevolent, violent, deceiving entity that takes the form of the victim’s loved one — and for Niam and Ryan, it’s each other.
If you’re a horror freak like me, the formula of Leviticus and this evil Entity is extremely reminiscent of other beloved spooky films like It Follows and Smile. However, unlike in its predecessors, we never see the Entity’s true form in Leviticus.
What is the Entity in Leviticus?
Unpacking the Entity’s ‘true form’, Chiarella told PEDESTRIAN.TV that he doesn’t know what it would exactly look like. However, he admitted, “It’s all in the eye of the beholder”.
For Bird, he speculated the true form of the Entity could be a dark figure, similar to something you would find in Kane Parsons‘ Backrooms.
“Is it like a stick, black like Backrooms, like a stick figure before it turns into a ghost?” Bird speculated before he and Chiarella said, “Who knows?”
Ultimately, Leviticus was inspired by Chiarella’s observation of homophobia and how society has regressed when it comes to acceptance of the LGBTQIA+ community.
“I grew up in a time as a young gay man where we saw a lot of progress being made, and that all built towards a time when I was able to marry my husband. But then, I think things sort of shifted in the last five to 10 years,” Chiarella told PEDESTRIAN.TV.
“We started to regress a little bit on that, and suddenly there was a little bit more homophobic language being used in public and in political speech, and little bits of microaggressions in day-to-day life.
“I wanted to do something that kind of explored that, but not in a way we’d seen before 30 years ago.”
According to ABC News, NSW Police have recorded over 200 incidents of anti-LGBTQIA+ violence since 2023. In 36 cases, young offenders lured victims through dating apps.
On top of that grim statistic, a survey by Roy Morgan recorded that from 2024 to 2025, about 21 per cent of Australians believed homosexuality is immoral, which was an increase from previous years.
While Leviticus and its evil, spiteful, hateful entity are all fiction, the underlying story is a true reflection of Australia’s attitudes towards the LGBTQIA+ community.
