Adrian Amos expected to sign with Packers

The Chicago Bears took their first big hit of free agency Tuesday. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, safety Adrian Amos is leaving town to join the enemy Green Bay Packers.

Amos, who turns 26 next month, joined the Bears as a fifth-round pick in 2015 out of Penn State. He became an unexpected starter that season and emerged as one of the Bears’ most valuable defenders over the last two years.

Amos was the Bears’ highest-graded defender in 2017, per Pro Football Focus, and enjoyed a career-high in tackles (73) and interceptions (2) in 2018.

He now joins the Packers, who according to Rapoport will also sign former Ravens edge defender Za’Darius Smith.

Amos’ presence in the Packers defense will work against the Bears in two ways. First, his departure creates a void in the secondary for Chicago. Second, and possibly more important, is his working knowledge of the Bears offense. He’ll absolutely give his new teammates clues and tips on the inner-workings of coach Matt Nagy.

Chicago has been relatively quiet so far in free agency, signing RB Mike Davis and nickel CB Buster Skrine on Day 1. They’re expected to make a bigger splash move Tuesday.
