Adorable nest of chicks set up home inside a traffic cone

These are the heart-melting pictures of a nest of chicks inside a traffic cone.

Welsh schoolboy Josef Merrill, 12, was riding his bike in the school yard when he decided to create an obstacle course with the abandoned traffic cone.

But when he lifted it up he was shocked to discover a nest made of grass, moss, and twigs inside – in a perfect triangle shape. And in the middle there were six chicks chirping for food.

Josef quietly returned the cone over the nest so not to distress the chicks or their parents.

Josef, from Bryn Yr Odyn, Dolgellau, said: "I was out playing with my older brother Spike when I decided to use the traffic cone for an obstacle course.

"As I was walking away I turned back and noticed this triangular shape made of moss.

"I went back over to it only to discover a beautifully-woven birds' nest with several chicks with wide open beaks.

"I hurried back to get the cone to protect the them. I decided to go back a week later to check on the chicks and they seem to be doing fine.

"They've even grown feathers. I've never seen anything like that before but it was a lovely surprise."
