Adorable Edinburgh ducklings saved from tramline after being abandoned by mother

Three adorable ducklings were rescued this morning after a close call with the ongoing tram works.

The little family of newborns were saved from what could have been a dangerous fate after they were abandoned by their mother.

While working on the new Trams to Newhaven project on Thursday (April 29), foreman Pascal had noticed the trio near the works, which have been underway since November 2019.

After taking them to safety, the ducklings were then passed on to the SSPCA, who had arrived at the site to collect them.

Speaking this afternoon, the project had praised Pascal and the SSPCA "for their support".

In a tweet, they said:

"This morning SFN foreman, Pascal, rescued small baby ducklings who became strayed from their mother. Thanks to @ScottishSPCA for their support in attending our work site to collect them and well done Pascal."

It can be common for 'straying' to occur in ducks, when either the mother mistakenly or purposefully abandons their young, leaving them in a potentially life-threatening situation.

The ducklings at Haddington were also safely returned to the river. (East Lothian Police.)

A similar occurrence took place in East Lothian on Wednesday (April 28), when a group of ducklings and their mother had made their way into Haddington police station.

The eight little chicks were then looked after by officers before they too were collected by the SSPCA and taken back to the riverside.
