Adorable dog found perilously close to motorway and police want to find their owner

An adorable dog has been found at the side of a motorway - as an appeal is launched to find its owner.

Highways England shared an image of the pooch, which was found near junction 22 of the M1, close to Markfield in Leicestershire.

It is not known how the pet got there, and it is a relief that it was not run over.

The animal, believed to be a Cockerpoo or Labradoodle, was rescued by traffic officers, Nottinghamshire Live reports.

Posting two pictures of the dog on Twitter yesterday, Highways England wrote: "Traffic Officers have rescued this good dog from the M1 around J22 near Markfield in Leicestershire.

"If you know the owner, please call 0300 123 5000 with information. Thank you!"

When asked in a Tweet if they'd checked the dog for a chip, the agency replied: "We're taking them to a vet to check."

It prompted social media users to volunteer their services if the pet's owner is not found.

One man on Twitter wrote: "I will take him/her if the owner isn't found or no longer wants them. Please DM me if this is an option."
