Adnan Januzaj believes both he and Memphis Depay were harshly treated by Louis van Gaal during their time together at Manchester United.
Belgian winger Januzaj burst onto the scene under the guidance of David Moyes at Old Trafford, but saw himself fall out of favour when Dutch veteran Van Gaal was appointed as the Scot's permanent replacement in the summer of 2014.
Januzaj's playing time diminished throughout the season and he was loaned out to Borussia Dortmund the following summer after Depay arrived from PSV Eindhoven.
Despite the excitement among fans surrounding both of the wingers, neither managed to gain the trust of Van Gaal and Januzaj believes he was to blame for them both eventually leaving the club under Jose Mourinho.
“Well, Louis van Gaal. I really shouldn't defend myself against him, it is enough to check the statistics," Januzaj told told Het Nieuwsblad.
"Whenever I made the difference with an assist or a goal, I was back on the bench afterwards. The same was true for Memphis. If he (Van Gaal) says he has given us enough opportunities, he is not telling the truth, it is that simple. Fortunately, there are plenty of people at Manchester United who know how to appreciate me."
Januzaj might only be remembered as a flash in the pan for his electric start to life at Old Trafford but the winger insists the best is yet to come, and he is looking to United legend Ryan Giggs for inspiration.
He added: "Because I started so young, people forget that I'm still only 25. My best years as a footballer are yet to come. I am a technical player who has never had major injuries. If all goes well, I still have at least ten years of career ahead of me. Maybe not a decade as a flank player, but I have the qualities to play in the centre. Ryan Giggs did the same at the end of his career.”
