Cleaning crews of Shinkansen bullet trains operated by East Japan Railway Co. began wearing Hawaiian shirts on Saturday. Crews in Hawaiian shirts will clean the trains of the Tohoku, Joetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansen lines until around the end of August.
On Saturday, cleaning crews wearing caps with artificial hibiscus flowers pinned onto them and dressed in red or blue Hawaiian shirts skillfully cleaned floors and seats in the cars in less than 10 minutes at Tokyo Station, where many Shinkansen trains begin or end their runs.
After finishing their work, the crews lined up and bowed to passengers waiting to board the train.
An official at a subsidiary of JR East that provides cleaning services said, "We hope that passengers will feel relaxed by seeing crews in Hawaiian outfits and enjoy their journeys."
