Admiral Bar make 70 pizzas for Glasgow's homeless out of ingredients going to waste

The Admiral Bar made 70 pizzas for Glasgow's homeless before they were forced to close this week.

Staff were cleaning the pub and clearing out the kitchen last night when they decided to do one last good deed to help the city's most vulnerable.

The team used ingredients which were destined to go to waste to make dozens of pizzas, pasta dishes and rolls for the Homeless Street Team to take to people on the streets.

Co-owner Dave tells Glasgow Live: "Head Chef Kieran Woodward came up with the idea.

"We normally trade around 70 pizzas on a Tuesday at our quiz night, so we had the dough and sugo ready to go from Monday, with a shelf life of around a week. We made up some food parcels for staff to take home too."

As small businesses struggle in the COVID-19 outbreak, Dave admits he is worried about the impact it will have on the wellbeing of his workers and the future of small business.

He added: "We're all in the same situation. The lack of clarity and direction from central and Scottish government leaves us in a twilight zone. They say there's assistance but there's not the infrastructure to implement it. Who's able to survive in time to do that? Every household every, every independent business will be tightening their belts.

"We are at the whims of this hellish pandemic and how governments can see fit to deal with it. If there's a picture of absolute clarity, I would be surprised."

In the meantime, Dave has been compiling Spotify mixes for pals to listen to, and even held the Admiral's much-loved Tuesday night pub quiz over Facebook on Tuesday.

"We want to keep spirits up right now. Small acts of charity and kindness are all we have at this time."

All the best to the Admiral Bar team! We look forward to heading back for your famous mac and cheese once this is all over.
