Admiral and Principality named as two of the best big employers in the UK

Admiral and Principality Building Society have been named as two of the best largest employers in the UK to work for.

The financial services firms have made the top ten in the 2021 UK’s Best Workplaces in the award category of firms employing more than 1,000.

Admiral, which employs nearly 7,500 at offices in Cardiff, Swansea and Newport, is ranked fifth while Principality, which has its HQ in Cardiff but with branches across Wales, is ranked eight.

The awards, from body the Great Place to Work UK, are independently assessed with a focus on identifying workplace cultures built on trust and engagement, supported by innovative people management practices.

Topping the list this year in the 1,000-plus employee category is hotel chain Hilton, which has a hotel in the centre of Cardiff. Ranked 19th is IT consultancy firm CGI, which has a presence in Bridgend.

Admiral Group chief executive, Milena Mondini, said, “I couldn’t be prouder of our Great Place to Work Best Workplaces ranking, particularly as the award is based on feedback from our employees. We’ve featured on the list every year for over twenty years, and this achievement is driven by the unique culture we have here at Admiral.

“Our people are the key to our success, and this has never been more evident than over the last year. They’re the driving force behind our record performances, our great customer service and our contribution to the wider community. And they’ve shown a strength and resilience throughout these challenging times that’s truly admirable

“I couldn’t wish for better colleagues, and I can’t thank them enough for everything they do to make Admiral such a fantastic place to work.”

Julie-Ann Haines, chief executive of the Principality said: “We’re so proud to be named as a top ten Best Workplace in the UK. Since the beginning of the pandemic and beyond, it’s been a key focus for us to ensure colleagues feel supported as they adapt to new ways of working.

"This includes placing a real emphasis on promoting health and wellbeing in what has been a difficult period and increasing flexible working arrangements to help colleagues with childcare and achieving a good work-life balance.

“The culture at Principality is renowned for being one that is friendly, open and inclusive and we actively encourage colleagues to be themselves at work. Our colleagues are fundamental to our success – they are passionate about doing the right thing for our members and supporting our local communities.

"As key workers, our branch colleagues were committed to supporting our members in the best way and providing an essential service throughout the pandemic."
