Adil Ray speaks out against 'disgusting abuse' aimed at GMB's Alex Beresford

Adil Ray has spoken out about the abuse aimed at his Good Morning Britain co-presenters during a discussion about racism.

The 46-year-old comedian, who was standing in for Piers Morgan as she took some time off, has shut down the "nonsense" trolling that Alex Beresford, Sean Fletcher and Ranvir Singh are subjected to every time they present on the ITV breakfast show.

The Citizen Khan star said that the show's BAME presenters are hit with some horrendous trolling on social media, singling out Alex's debut as a presenter last week as an example in case.

Alex, 39, moved from his usual position as weatherman to a frontline role as co-host and while he was largely hailed for his performance, he still received some disgusting racial abuse on Twitter.

Adil was speaking to historian David Olusoga about the subject, after David said that he had been left clinically depressed by the racism he had faced in the TV industry.

Addressing the subject, Adil said: "There have been changes on-screen and we recognise that - I mean, we're here right now.

"Even though it's not permanent jobs, things have definitely changed."

Adil's co-host Ranvir Singh added: "You do get trolled for it - you get a lot of Twitter nonsense.

"You were reading out a lot this morning, I don't know if you want to go into it."

Adil replied to this: "Oh we do get trolled for it. I don't want to go into it, but I know Alex Beresford and Sean Fletcher got it last week.

"We are part of the change."

Adil, who was working his last shift as presenter for a while, added: "We do get grief on television, it's part of the job.

"But what I've done over the past seven weeks on this show, is concentrate on the amount of love.

"I spend less time on social media and just learnt to ignore the minority views and embrace the love."

Regular presenters Piers Morgan and Ben Shephard are due to return to GMB over the coming weeks which will mean there will be fewer opportunities for the likes of Alex to repeat his moment in the hotseat, which he enjoyed alongside Kate Garraway.

Sean Fletcher made his return to the show for the first time since Susanna Reid moved from the BBC Breakfast show.
