Adidas sales show strong rise during World Cup

Name on the shirt: Spain, with adidas kit, lift the World Cup

Adidas today reported soaring earnings and a healthy sales rise in its second quarter, which included most of the World Cup.

The sportswear manufacturer, which made the official World Cup Jabulani football as well as the kits of winners Spain, said net income for April-June was 126 million.

A year earlier, it eked out earnings of 9 million.

The company's revenues were up 19% in euro terms at 2.9 billion. Adidas said that was an 11% increase in currency-neutral terms as the euro declined sharply in the quarter.

Adidas shares were up 3.3% 43.04 in Frankfurt. First-half earnings were up to 295 million from 13 million. Revenues rose 11% in euro terms to 5.6 billion.

The company's full report is due on August 4.
