Adelphi Hotel offered as emergency hospital accommodation to help in coronavirus fight

The owners of Liverpool's Adelphi Hotel have offered its rooms for use as emergency extra hospital accommodation amid the looming NHS crisis over coronavirus.

Owners Britannia Hotels today said they could provide buildings with more than 600 beds across the country, with the Adelphi, along with Southport's Prince of Wales and Scarisbrick Hotels, among them.

The company said they hoped this would "free up valuable bed spaces for critical care."

A spokesperson said: "We are uniquely placed to provide extensive support accommodation for hospitals or care homes during this difficult time."

They added: "It so happens that some of our hotels were already under active consideration for possible conversion into private health and social care facilities.

"Although these plans were at an early stage, we believe that the schemes were certainly feasible.

"This crisis affects us all, and and we believe that we can offer an immediate practical response to assist the healthcare providers."

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to update the country later today on the next steps in the country's battle with coronavirus, with the partial closure of schools expected to be on the agenda.
