Adele Roberts leaving BBC Radio One ‘after an incredible eight years’

Adele Roberts is leaving BBC Radio One after eight years, the broadcaster has confirmed.

The Southport-born DJ, 44, has already presented her last show, which was in May.

Roberts first rose to fame in 2002 as a contestant on Big Brother 3, where she finished in seventh place.

She joined the BBC in 2012 as a presenter on BBC Radio 1Xtra before joining Radio 1 in 2015 as the station’s Early Breakfast show host.

Roberts was diagnosed with stage two bowel cancer in October 2021 and kept fans regularly updated as she underwent treatment and had a stoma fitted, which she has named Audrey. In June she announced that she was free from the disease.

In 2019 she took part in I’m A Celebrity, but was the first contestant to be voted out of the jungle.

Confirming her departure and thanking her for her time on the station, Aled Haydn Jones, head of Radio 1, said: “She continually goes above and beyond for others and I want to say a huge thank you to her for everything.”

He went on to praise her work ethic, saying she “always puts others first”.

“Whether it’s key workers during the pandemic on her show, other people’s health during her own diagnosis of cancer,” he added.

Roberts has yet to comment on the news herself, the Standard has contacted her representative for comment.

Her surprise exit comes almost a year after Scott Mills and Chris Stark left the station and a number of other new changes to the Radio 1 schedule have also been announced.

From September, Sam MacGregor and Danni Diston will join forces to co-host the new Weekend Breakfast show, which will move from London to Cardiff.

Jess Iszatt will also be joining Radio 1 as the new host of BBC Introducing on Sundays, taking over from Gemma Bradley.
