Adele Roberts emotional as she scoops top Diva Awards gong amid cancer battle

Radio 1 DJ Adele Roberts was visibly overcome with emotion, after scooping a prestigious gong at the annual Diva Awards ceremony on Friday night.

The 42-year old, who is currently receiving treatment for bowel cancer, was honoured at a ceremony in Covent Garden's Waldorf Hilton Hotel.

Chosen by the Diva Magazine team, Adele collected the Diva Choice Award and was described as a "trailblazer in broadcasting, bringing lesbian visibility to the heart of Radio 1."

The star was visibly reduced to tears as she collected the unexpected award on stage, before she sat back down with girlfriend Kate Holderness holding the trophy aloft.

At their table Adele took to her Instagram account and posted a story that said: "I cannot believe it. Crying tears of joy. What an amazing surprise and honour.

"I'm having the best night of all time. I'm sorry if my face looks a mess because I've just been crying. I've got a Diva award! It's our baby!

"This means the world. Thank you so much."

She continued: "To Linda (Riley, publisher and founder) and the whole Team Diva. Thank you for everything you do to represent our community. For what you do to empower others, but also for making me feel so amazing tonight."

Adele first revealed she had bowel cancer in an Instagram post in October shortly after discovering she was suffering from the disease.

She wrote: "For a while now I've been struggling with my digestion. Thanks to a conversation I had with my Dad a few years back I went to my GP for a check up.

"I'll be honest, I was embarrassed but I also knew that it could be something serious. So I went just in case. I didn’t think anything of it at first and just assumed it might be food sensitivity.

"After a few phone calls I was sent for some examinations and checks. I was then diagnosed with bowel cancer."

Surgery followed that saw part of Adele's bowel removed, before she began chemotherapy.

Meanwhile, other winners at the Diva Awards included actress Suranne Jones, who took home Celebrity Ally of the Year and Media Personality of the Year, Sandi Toksvig.

Diva aims to celebrate inspirational lesbian, bisexual, trans, intersex and queer women and non binary people in the community.
