Adele hints she put off 'exhausting' divorce 'for years' ahead of new break up album

Adele ’s new music is inspired by changes in her life which she had been "putting off for years".

The singer, 33, yesterday released her her first song in six years, Easy On Me, which has been described by Radio 2 DJ Jo Whiley as "flawless". A new album called 30 will follow on November 19.

Tens of millions of fans watched the movie-style video for Go Easy On Me in the first few hours of its release on YouTube.

Shot in Canada last month, it starts black and white and turns colour as the London-born star goes on a road trip.

The lyrics seem to ask for forgiveness from her ex-husband Simon Konecki – and possibly from her eight-year-old son Angelo too.

She references the 2019 breakdown of their marriage and why the three could not live happily together.

She sings: "There ain’t no room for our things to change. When we are both so deeply stuck in our ways, you can’t deny how hard I’ve tried. I changed who I was to put you both first, but now I give up... Go easy on me, baby."

Adele and Konecki met and began dating in 2011 when she was just 23.

In a round of radio interviews, Adele said Go Easy On Me was the first song she wrote for 30, when the split was seemingly still raw.

She hinted the divorce should have come sooner, saying: "It was exhausting and it was really hard work. But the more and more you put it off, the worse and worse it gets, and I’d been putting it off for years."

Adele also said she had lost "the appreciation of what a gift it is" to make music.

She said: "I feel like I got a bit frightened of it for a while."

And she said of the album: "It was bloody hard work, but I’m really proud of it."

Adele also hopes to do "a big proper tour again" when the pandemic allows.

She said: "I wouldn’t do it quite as long as I did it last time, but, I’d love to do that.

"But all the Covid rules are so different everywhere, and , and it feels like no-one’s really on the same page.

The last thing I’d want to do is cancel any shows again."
