A 21-year-old woman from metropolitan Adelaide has been admitted to hospital in a critical condition with invasive meningococcal disease.

SA Health said multiple people who had close contact with the woman have been identified and six people have been directed to take clearance antibiotics.

Information about meningococcal is being distributed to other people the woman has been in contact with, in accordance with the national guidelines.

There have been two cases of invasive meningococcal disease reported in South Australia to date this year, compared to one case reported at the same time last year.

Of the two cases, one was the strain called serogroup W and this case is yet to be identified.

A total of five cases were reported last year, of which three were serogroup B and two were serogroup Y.

Meanwhile, a man in his 40s remains in critical condition in the Royal Adelaide Hospital with COVID-19.

The man was moved from a dedicated quarantine hotel for positive cases into the hospital's intensive care unit nine days ago.

At the time, health authorities said the man was believed to have the South African variant of the disease and was suffering breathlessness.

There are currently five active cases of COVID-19 in South Australia, all of which were acquired overseas.
