Adelaide teen injured after car crashes during police chase

A 17-year-old girl is in a critical condition after crashing a stolen car.

A 17-year-old girl has suffered life-threatening injuries after a police pursuit at Morphett Vale, in Adelaide's south, earlier this morning.

Just before 5:00am police were carrying out "speed detection duties" on Main South Road at Hackham, when they recorded a blue Ford sedan allegedly travelling at 96 kilometres per hour in an 80kph zone.

Police said they turned on their emergency lights to stop the car, but it sped away, sparking a brief pursuit.

The Ford turned onto Seaford Road and lost control, crashing into a retaining wall.

The 17-year-old driver suffered head and chest injuries, while a 24-year-old male passenger has minor injuries.

The car is alleged to have been stolen earlier in the night.

"Early indications are, that the police were some way behind the vehicle in an attempt to try and catch up with it," Senior Sergeant Scott Collins said.

"They did have their emergency lights activated at the time and the sirens."

The passenger has been arrested and is facing charges including breach of bail.
