Adelaide restaurant worker was stabbed 80 times, court told

A court has heard an Adelaide restaurant worker, who was murdered in the luxury city home of two high-ranking public servants, was stabbed 80 times.

Numan Mohammed, 21, appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court via video link over the alleged murder of 39-year-old Kim Chau.

Ms Chau's body was found at a home in Adelaide's CBD in September.

Prosecutor John Mattner asked for a seven-month delay because the case was complicated and involved officers combing through 1,000 hours of CCTV footage from thousands of cameras throughout the city.

"[The police] have actually gone out and got CCTV," Mr Mattner told Magistrate Simon Smart.

Mr Smart asked the prosecutor to explain exactly why it would take police so long to compile its preliminary brief of evidence and a further eight weeks for the Director of Public Prosecutions to determine what charge to proceed with.

"I realise that evidence might be complicated," he said.

Mr Mattner said investigating officers would condense all the CCTV footage gathered into a single video which would show the movements of the accused throughout the city on the night of the murder.

"There's CCTV of him being at the crime scene prior to the murder … he's then seen driving the victim's vehicle," he said

"The victim was stabbed 80 times."

He said DNA linked Mr Mohammed to the crime scene, but there was an "unexplained interpretation of the forensics".

He said the outstanding forensic report would not be available until the end of April.

Magistrate Smart granted a six-month delay and the case will be back before the court in June.

Ms Chau was living with Lois Boswell and Don Frater, who are deputy chief executives of different State Government departments.

Police said Ms Boswell and Mr Frater were not involved in the death in any way.
