Adelaide man says he downloaded Christchurch massacre video by 'mistake'

An Adelaide man who allegedly had extremist material in his possession says he recently converted to Islam and downloaded a video of the Christchurch mosque attack by mistake.

Bennett Russell Maynard-Brown, 32, faced the Adelaide Magistrates court for the first time today charged with possessing extremist material.

Outside court, the Glenelg East man said he did not know a video of the Christchurch mosque attacks, carried out in March 2019, was in his possession.

"The video of the Christchurch massacre, which was very wrong of me to have, it was downloaded off Facebook by accident," Mr Maynard-Brown said.

"It was a mistake, I didn't even realise I had it."

Australian terrorist Brenton Tarrant was sentenced to life without parole last August for killing 51 people and injuring another 40 at two separate mosques in the New Zealand city of Christchurch.

The terrorist attack was live-streamed.

Outside court, Mr Maynard-Brown said he had recently converted to Islam and was nothing like that "monster".

"I'm actually Muslim now, I converted last year so complete opposite to the monster in that video," Mr Maynard-Brown said.

"It was a complete misunderstanding."

During the court hearing, Mr Maynard-Brown's lawyer said she needed extra time to get more information from the prosecution.

In 2017 the state government introduced new laws to make it illegal to produce, distribute or possess so-called extremist material.

The matter will return to court in August.
