Adelaide man killed and another injured after tree branch falls on pergola

Neighbours say the Tea Tree Gully Council was warned about the tree on several occasions before the tragedy.

A 57-year-old man has died after a tree branch fell on his pergola, with the local council now facing questions over its handling of complaints about the tree before the tragedy.

Emergency services were called to the house on Amanda Drive in Surrey Downs just after 9:00pm, after the limb crashed down onto the home's pergola.

The man died at the scene.

Another man was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with minor injuries.

Neighbours said they were devastated by the loss.

Many residents along Amanda Drive said they had been worried about the old gum tree, and complained to Tea Tree Gully Council about it several times before the tragedy.

The Goodall family, which lives next door, said the tree was believed to be infested with white ants and it had dropped several limbs over the years, however not enough had been done about it.

"That tree should have been gone years ago," neighbour Stephen Goodall.

"I know it's dropped at least two branches on my parents' house and that's taken out [their] carport on a couple of occasions, and apparently, from what I've heard, it's also full of white ants.

"I think my parents on a couple of occasions have had council around to get limbs removed from it, but the council refuses to cut it down.

"Hopefully now they will come around and get rid of the tree. Otherwise I think they could be in for a lot of legal trouble."

Tea Tree Gully deputy mayor Lucas Jones said he encouraged residents to come forward with their concerns.

"I don't want to speculate today about whether it should have been taken down or not," he said.

"That might be the case and I am sure that any subsequent investigation will get to the bottom of this."

A report on the man's death is being prepared for the coroner.

Last month, a woman driving a car in the Adelaide Hills was killed when a tree branch fell on her vehicle.

The 59-year-old woman from Crafers died at the scene.

Four people were in the vehicle at the time of the accident, including a 26-year-old woman who was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Two passengers sitting in the back of the wagon were uninjured.

A second car, travelling in the opposite direction, was also hit by the branch, but the driver was not seriously injured.
