Adelaide man admits he tried to make 'Mother of Satan' bomb

Police performed a controlled detonation at the Davoren Park property.

A man has admitted to taking steps to make a bomb at his Adelaide home, where police had to carry out controlled detonations of the devices in his backyard in April.

Aaron Ellis has pleaded guilty in the Adelaide Magistrates Court to two counts of taking steps to manufacture an explosive device and one count of possessing instructions on how to make an explosive device under suspicious circumstances.

Mr Ellis, 43, will be arraigned in the District Court in January 2020.

Charges of possessing and manufacturing an explosive device were withdrawn by prosecutors.

In April, police found highly-volatile explosives known as 'Mother of Satan' at Ellis's Davoren Park property, before officers safely detonated the devices.

Holes were later dug in the backyard of Ellis's home surrounded by sandbags.

Surrounding properties were evacuated as emergency services carried out several controlled blasts.

During a previous court hearing, Ellis's lawyer Stacey Carter said he "did not intend to hurt anybody" and had "huge community support".

Other details about the explosives remain suppressed.
