Thousands of people have gathered for the Anzac Day dawn service in the heart of Adelaide, with today's ceremony highlighting the role women play, and have played, in the defence force and war.
Wreaths were laid as the sun rose over North Terrace, with the dignitaries attending including Governor Hieu Van Le and his wife Lan, Premier Steven Marshall and Opposition Leader Peter Malinauskas.
"A woman first commanded one of our Anzac frigates back in 2007 … we've got female fighter pilots these days and we've created a new special section for the servicewomen to participate in this year's march," RSL Anzac Day Committee chair Ian Smith told the service.
"I think people connect with Anzac Day and with the values that we associate with our Anzacs.
"We think about the … courage in adversity and … the resilience to keep on fighting when things are tough."
Services have also been held in many Adelaide suburbs, with up to 1,000 people attending the dawn service at Kensington Gardens Reserve in the city's east.
More than 150 commemorative events are being held around South Australia.
