Adelaide carer arrested over aggravated assault of man with disabilities

Police allege the assault occurred on Monday.

South Australian police have charged a 53-year-old carer with the aggravated assault of a young man with disabilities.

Detectives arrested the woman from Adelaide's east on Tuesday.

Police said she was acting as a care worker when she allegedly assaulted the young man at Athelstone, in the north-eastern suburbs, on Monday.

The man was not seriously injured in the incident.

Police said the woman was suspended from her role as a carer while an investigation was underway.

She was bailed to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court in March.

In-home disability care has been in the spotlight in South Australia since the case of Ann Marie Smith was revealed earlier this year.

Police said Ms Smith died on April 6 from septic shock, multi-organ failure, severe pressure sores, malnutrition and issues connected with her cerebral palsy after being stuck in a cane chair for 24 hours a day in her Kensington Park home.

A federal investigation into the death recommended sweeping changes to the oversight of vulnerable National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) recipients — including that participants have more than one care worker.

Her death prompted multiple inquiries, including by a state taskforce and the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, which appointed former judge Alan Robertson to lead an independent review.

Ms Smith's 68-year-old carer has been charged with manslaughter and the company she worked for has been banned from operating.
