The landmark 7 RCR, the official address of India’s Prime Minister, is history.
Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday approved renaming the Race Course Road in New Delhi as Lok Kalyan Marg.
The decision was taken at meeting of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) under the chairmanship of Kejriwal, who is a member of the civic body.
New Delhi MP Meenkashi Lekhi had earlier submitted a proposal to the NDMC to rename the road based on the philosophy of BJP ideologue Deen Dayal Upadhyay as ‘Ekatma Marg’.
Kejriwal and AAP Delhi Cantonment MLA Surinder Singh demanded renaming this road after Guru Govind Singh.
Earlier in the day, Kejriwal tweeted, “A no. of Sikh groups met me. They want RCR to be named after Sh Guru Gobind Singh ji.”
However, a consensus was reached at the council meeting on Wednesday to rename the road as Lok Kalyan Marg.
This is the second road in the Lutyens’ zone of Delhi to be renamed in recent times. Last year, Aurangzeb Road was renamed as APJ Abdul Kalam Road after the former president.
The council also decided to name a roundabout near Rakabganj Gurudwara as Guru Govind Singh roundabout.
