CHANDIGARH: The Punjab government on Monday accorded approval for creating 25 additional seats each in the government medical colleges (GMCs) of Patiala and Faridkot.

Punjab has 12 medical colleges - four government, six privates, one under PPP mode and one Centre-run. All of them put together have just 1,750 MBBS seats - 800 in government and 950 in private colleges.

Punjab medical education and research minister Chetan Singh Jauremajra said that the Punjab Government was committed to improving the health and education sector. Keeping that in mind, the state government has decided to create additional seats in both GMCs, as well as efforts, were being made to open medical colleges in every district of the state.

The minister also instructed the authorities to commence classes in the GMCs of Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala and Sangrur from the next academic year.

Directing to further improve the functioning of hospitals of medical colleges, the minister ordered to ensure quality healthcare facilities so that people would not face any hardships to get these services. Jauremajra also directed the authorities to provide free medicines to the patients undergoing treatment in the hospitals of the medical colleges as soon as possible.
