Additional expertise sought to help deliver Hull's £73m cruise terminal ambition

Hull’s cruise terminal ambition has taken another step forward with the city council giving the go-ahead for the appointment of specialist technical support to drive delivery.

Architect and specialist marine engineer input into the £73 million scheme are to be tendered for, in what is seen as a £100,000 early-stage investment in the proposal for Sammy’s Point by The Deep.

It follows a similar move for specialist planning consultants last month, with a £600,000 to £1 million pot identified to fund the steering through the complex process.

A cruise terminal would bring a new dimension to the city, furthering the experience with Belgian and Dutch ferry links and building on Hull’s recent City of Culture status.

It is also seen as benefiting the likes of York, Lincoln and Nottingham when it comes to tourism spend, with all considered in reach for excursions while a vessel is in port.

Cllr Daren Hale, leader of Hull City Council said: “In order to progress the new cruise terminal project, we require the services of specialist marine engineers and architects with knowledge and experience in designing and delivering cruise infrastructure.

“This support will assist the council at this stage in developing this important project that will not only benefit Hull but the entire Yorkshire and Lincolnshire region. Being the exit and entry point for Europe, a cruise terminal is a logical development for Hull’s proud maritime tradition.”

Work is seen as running through to 2025, with a commercial development partner appointment postponed by the pandemic. Discussions with Associated British Ports are understood to be ongoing, with the major Humber operator having recently opened the new £55 million Horizon cruise facility in Southampton.
