Addison Russell will start at second base for the Cubs Wednesday night

CHICAGO _ The Cubs called up Addison Russell from Triple-A Iowa before their game Wednesday night against the Marlins at Wrigley Field. He will start at second base and hit eighth against right-hander Jose Urena.

Russell recently completed serving a 40-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy.

Russell, who was optioned to Iowa after the completion of his suspension, batted .222 with two doubles, three home runs and 13 RBIs in Triple A.

He was the Cubs starting shortstop for the last 3 { seasons before he was placed on administrative leave Sept. 21 after his ex-wife, Melisa Reidy, alleged on social media that he physically and mentally abused her.

Russell's promotion was one of several Cubs moves before the game, which was pushed up to 6:35 p.m. because of the threat of rain.

The Cubs also placed veteran utilityman Ben Zobrist on the restricted list for personal reasons and right-handed reliever Pedro Strop on the injured list because of a strained left hamstring. The team also called up lefty reliever Mike Montgomery, who was on the IL since April 5 because of a strained left lat.

The Cubs gave no timeline for how long Zobrist, who was a late scratch from the lineup Tuesday night, would be out.
