CHICAGO _ The Cubs will promote infielder Addison Russell from Triple-A Iowa before their game Wednesday night against the Marlins at Wrigley Field.
Russell, who recently completed serving a 40-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy, wasn't in Iowa's lineup Wednesday against Memphis.
Russell, who was optioned to Iowa after the completion of his suspension, batted .222 with two doubles, three home runs and 13 RBIs in Triple A. He was the Cubs' starting shortstop for the last 3 { seasons before he was placed on administrative leave Sept. 21 after his ex-wife, Melisa Reidy, alleged on social media that he physically and mentally abused her.
Russell's promotion is expected to be one of several Cubs moves before the game, which was pushed up to 6:35 p.m. because of the threat of rain.
Infielder Daniel Descalso has been bothered by a sore left ankle, and infielder/outfielder Ben Zobrist was scratched from Tuesday's lineup because of a personal matter.
David Kaplan of NBC Chicago first reported that Russell was in Chicago and would be promoted.
