Adder spotted at Gower beach leads to warning from vet to dog owners

An adder has been spotted on a Gower beach, leading to a warning, especially for pet owners.

The member of the only venomous species of snake native to the UK was spotted by a walker on Oxwich Bay, Gower, shortly before the nationwide lockdown due to the coronavirus outbreak.

An average adder is usually about 50 to 60 cm in length. The snake found at Oxwich was estimated to be around 60cm long.

The sighting has prompted advice for anyone who might encounter an adder, which only attack in self defence.

A spokesman for Haven Vets, which was alerted to the adder’s presence by a client, said dogs were particularly vulnerable.

The spokesman said: “The European adder is the only venomous snake native to the UK.

“They can be found throughout mainland Britain, most commonly on dry sandy heaths, sand dunes, rocky hillsides, moorland and woodland edges.

“Adder bites mainly occur around a dog’s legs or face and typically result in a dark, painful swelling. You may also be able to see two small puncture wounds in the centre of the swelling.

“If left untreated, dogs may collapse, have blood clotting problems, tremors or convulsions.

“Unfortunately, dogs are particularly at risk of adder bites due to their curious nature.

“Urgent treatment may be needed if your dog has been bitten by an adder, so contact your vet as soon as possible for advice."
