Adam Wingard Hints At Thundercats Live-Action Adaptation After Godzilla Success

Adam Wingard

Director Adam Wingard, known for his work on Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, has hinted that his next project could potentially be a live-action adaptation of the popular 1980s cartoon ThunderCats. In a recent interview with Collider, Wingard expressed his intention to stay faithful to the source material while also incorporating a more serious tone to appeal to a wider audience.

Wingard emphasized the importance of balancing the serious elements with the adventurous spirit of the original ThunderCats cartoon, acknowledging that the characters often faced perilous situations even in a show aimed at children. He shared his personal connection to the series, recalling a particularly intense episode that left a lasting impression on him.

The director revealed that ThunderCats is among his top priorities, with the script currently in development in collaboration with screenwriter Simon Barrett. Wingard's experience working on Godzilla vs. Kong has influenced his vision for the ThunderCats movie, drawing inspiration from the visually stunning Hollow Earth scenes in the MonsterVerse.

Reflecting on his initial doubts about adapting ThunderCats, Wingard credited the pandemic period and his post-production work on Godzilla vs. Kong for sparking his creative realization. He found parallels between the aesthetic of the Hollow Earth and the ideal look for a ThunderCats film, leading to his decision to pursue the project.

While fans eagerly anticipate the live-action ThunderCats movie, Wingard's immediate focus remains on Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, set to hit theaters on March 29. The film features an ensemble cast including Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Dan Stevens, Kaylee Hottle, Alex Ferns, and Fala Chen as the iconic monsters unite to face a new threat from the Hollow Earth.
