Middlesex have been given a headache with the call-up of Adam Voges to Australia’s Ashes squad.
The new season starts at Lord’s on 12 April with the visit of Nottinghamshire in the County Championship and Middlesex now need to find a new overseas player to replace their departing 35-year-old captain.
Voges will be available for the first four championship matches before joining up with the Australian squad for their tour to the West Indies in June and should he feature in any of the Tests he will be Australia’s second-oldest debutant batsman, behind Arthur Richardson who was 36 years and 148 days when he appeared in 1924.
“All of us at Middlesex are naturally delighted for Adam on his deserved inclusion in the squad,” Middlesex said on their website. “However, this does leave us with the difficult problem of needing to find a replacement overseas player for the 2015 season with some immediacy.
“Conversations have been had, a shortlist of suitable players has been drawn up, and in light of this morning’s announcement by Cricket Australia we can now begin to formalise these plans to secure a replacement.”
