Adam Schefter: Jags among the teams who ‘make sense’ for Gerald McCoy

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers hit the NFL community with the news of the week after announcing that they would be mutually parting ways with longtime veteran defensive tackle Gerald McCoy for cap reasons. Of course, with him being a multi-time Pro Bowler and All-Pro, there won’t be a shortage of teams interested his services heading forward — and ESPN’s Adam Schefter believes the Jags are one of the teams who are a fit for the veteran.

With Tom Coughlin believing in a strong rotation in the defensive trenches, it’s possible the Jags could be interested, but they recently parted ways with defensive tackle Malik Jackson for the same reasons the Bucs are probably parting ways with McCoy: cap issues. However, if the Jags feel McCoy offers an upgrade in terms of stopping the rush in addition to his abilities as a pass rusher, they could throw their name in the hat for McCoy’s services.

Of course, with two of their rookies unsigned, Yannick Ngakoue wanting a new contract and just over $13 million in available cap space, Mccoy would have to take a significant discount. Sure, the Jags could manipulate the cap, but that would take some willing veterans, which is something the front office can’t bank on. For those reasons, as much as they may be enticed, signing McCoy could be a long shot for the Jags.
