Adam Sandler Reveals ‘Painful Change’ to Happy Gilmore 2 Plot & Yeah I’m Sobbing

If I could list all of the movies that shaped me as a person, Happy Gilmore would definitely be in the top ten. And with the release of its highly-anticipated sequel on the horizon, comedian Adam Sandler has revealed a “painful change” he had to make to the second instalment, and honestly, it makes me want to sob.

Speaking to Collider, Sandler revealed that beloved golf legend “it’s all in the hips” Chubbs Peterson — portrayed by Carl Weathers — was supposed to play a major role in the sequel, despite dying in the first movie.

However, the comedian was forced to rewrite the plot following Weathers’ death in February 2024.

“We had a painful change. Carl Weathers had a massive part. I would talk to Carl, and we were excited, and then Carl passed away,” Sandler dished, adding that they had to reimagine the entire premise of Happy Gilmore 2.

“We had to rewrite a lot of the stuff, and even what the story was. We made a lot of nice references to how great Chubbs was in the movie. That was the biggest change.”

For those who need a refresher on the iconic character that is Chubbs, he first met Happy at a driving range where Happy was showing off his newfound long drive skills. Being a former golf pro — who was forced to retire after an alligator took his hand at his prime — Chubbs saw Happy’s potential and convinced him to take golf seriously.

After a series of victories, Happy decided to gift Chubbs with… the head of the alligator who took his hand. Unfortunately, the gift shocked Chubbs, who fell out of a window and died.

In the 2000 flick Little Nicky (another guilty pleasure of mine), Chubbs returns as an angel in heaven.

Per the publication, Chubbs was supposed to return in Gilmore’s dreams, and was even supposed to set up “a new emotional arc involving a family member”.

While they had to rewrite a massive amount of the sequel, Happy Gilmore 2 director Kyle Newacheck assured the publication that the movie will honour Weathers’ contribution to the beloved comedy.

“You can’t make Happy Gilmore without Chubbs Peterson,” Newacheck told Collider in April.

“It doesn’t exist. You can be assured his spirit is throughout the film. He may not be by Happy’s side anymore, but he’s on his shoulder.”

What is Happy Gilmore 2 about?

After clocking his gold jacket and wrapping up his pro-golf career, it appears that Happy has finally settled down. However, despite his successes in the first flick, Happy is still struggling with funds.

So, in an attempt to make some dosh to put his daughter through ballet school, Happy returns to the golf course with his iconic long drives!

While Chubbs won’t be in this sequel, Happy Gilmore 2 is set to return of iconic characters, such as Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin, Julie Bowen as Virginia Venit and Ben Stiller as Hal L.

New faces, including Travis Kelce, Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio AKA Bad Bunny and Margaret Qualley, are set to show face in the sequel.

Like I said, this movie really shaped me into the person I am, so it makes me happy knowing that Chubbs was originally given a huge space in the sequel. It’ll be lovely to see how they honour him in this sequel!

Happy Gilmore 2 drops July 25 on Netflix.
