Adam Peaty hailed as Team GB set new world record to win Tokyo 2020 mixed medley relay

Adam Peaty was hailed by his team-mates after leading Team GB to their fourth swimming gold at Tokyo 2020 thanks to a world record-beating performance in the 4x100m mixed medley relay.

Kathleen Dawson, Peaty, James Guy and Anna Hopkin made up a British team which won in a time of three minutes, 37.58 seconds.

It is the first time Great Britain have won four gold medals at an Olympics for 113 years, following Peaty’s success in the 100m breaststroke, Tom Dean’s win in the 200m freestyle and the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay team’s gold.

This is the second gold for two of the Team GB swimmers – Peaty and Guy, the latter of whom was part of the freestyle relay team.

It was the first time the mixed medley relay had been run as an event at the Olympics, with the two women swimming either side of the men’s legs.

Team GB had to fight back after Dawson slipped off the wall at the start of her backstroke leg, though she was able to claw back time to give her team-mates a chance.

And it was a chance they took superbly, with Peaty and Guy overturning British fortunes in the middle two splits.

Guy’s performance was nothing short of sensational, with the 25-year-old completing his 100m in just 50 seconds.

That left the final leg to Hopkin, who was up against American superstar Caleb Dressel, but the 25-year-old held on to claim a commanding win for Team GB.

China came home second, with Australia taking bronze, while the USA had left Dressel with too much to do as they finished fifth.

Following the event, Guy hailed Peaty for helping to change the mentality in the team which that has led to Britain’s extraordinary success in the pool at this Olympics.

"He’s changed British swimming massively. We know Adam’s going to win, we know Adam’s going to deliver," he told BBC Sport.

How many gold medals will Team GB win at the 2020 Olympics? Comment below.

"He came in with the second time 100m swimming breaststroke. That’s when it really started for me. Medals are here now, let’s keep this ball rolling.

"Tom Dean, Duncan Scott, Luke, the relay, it all just kept going and going."

Hopkin meanwhile, played down the threat of facing Dressel, a five time Olympic gold medallist.

“I was trying not to think about it [Dressel chasing her down]. I was trying not to think about how far ahead we were from them,” she told BBC Sport.

“It's just irrelevant when you're in the water - you've just got to race. When I turned I saw I still had a good bit of water in front of me and I just went for it.

“It's an amazing feeling and a privilege to be in this team.”

Team GB now have seven swimming medals so far in Tokyo and can add to that on Sunday with the men’s 4x100m medley relay team, Dan Jervis in the 1500m freestyle and Ben Broud in the 50m freestyle.
