Adam McVey slams Edinburgh landlord over 'antisemitic' comment towards Portobello Bross Bagels owner

Edinburgh City Council Leader, Adam McVey, has publicly slammed a landlord for 'antisemitic' comments made towards the owner of Bross Bagels.

It comes after EEN reported how the owner of much-loved Edinburgh bagel chain, Bross Bagels, was told by her landlord that asking for a rent break during the COVID-19 outbreak is "typical Jewish behaviour."

The council leader took to social media to show his support for 42-year-old Larah Bross, who owns five bagel shops across the capital.

In a Tweet, he said: "Disgraceful that a landlord thinks way to respond to a tenant’s request for support is with appalling casual antisemitism

" @BrossBagels (their Kosher bagels are delicious btw)

"I do agree with one thing he said, people should be proud of their Jewish identity.

"Chag Pesach Samech!"

The Council Leader also wished the Bross Bagels owner a happy Jewish holiday in Hebrew, saying: "Chag Pesach Samech!"

The Hebrew saying roughly translates as 'have a happy Passover' and refers to the eight-day Jewish holiday which begins on April 8 and ends on April 16.

The tweet attracted support for Adam McVey speaking out about the issue, with one person saying the tweet gave her "goosebumps."

They wrote: "This Tweet Council Leader, you just gave me goosebumps this morning.

"Thank you for this sign of support and leadership on behalf of Larah and the entire Jewish community."

Another person said: "Fair play Adam. More of this."

Not everyone was so happy with the response, however, with one local saying: "Your Scottish Government colleagues could help immediately by ensuring business grants issued per premises rather than per business, as they are in England.

"Wouldn't that mean 75k for them rather than 25k, Adam?"
