A second rider has died at this year’s Isle of Man TT after organisers announced the death of Scottish rider Adam Lyon following a crash during Monday’s Supersport 1 Race.
Lyon, 26, from Helensburgh, was competing at the TT for the first time this year and made a strong impression by qualifying in 24th for Monday’s opening race.
But organisers ACU Events Ltd confirmed shortly after the afternoon’s race that Lyon had suffered a fatal accident just after the 28th milestone at Casey’s while riding his Team Lyon Racing Yamaha.
Peter Hickman, who finished third in the race, said in the winners’ enclosure immediately after crossing the line that the leading riders has seen an accident while completing their fourth and final lap, although they were unsure of the severity of the crash.
Lyon’s best time around the Snaefell Mountain Course cam in Friday’s superbike qualifying session where he clocked an average speed of 123.443mph, and he managed a lap of 122.636mph on the 600cc Yamaha in the Supersport 1 Race before is accident.
Away from the TT, Lyon secured a best finish at the Ulster Grand Prix last year of 11th on his supersport machine, and also competed in the Pirelli National Superstock 600 Championship with podium finishes at both Croft and Silverstone.
The race was eventually won by Michael Dunlop, who clinched his second victory of the week.
