Adam Idah to take a stand against racism by taking a knee in Bulgaria

Adam Idah is ready to make a stand against racism by taking a knee in Bulgaria.

The Black Lives Matter campaign continues to be a powerful message across global sporting codes.

Stephen Kenny said a final decision will be down to the players who are discussing the matter.

Bulgaria were fined and slapped with a two-match stadium ban after supporters racially abused England players during a game in Sofia last year.

The game had to be stopped twice in the first-half because some fans made monkey noises towards Tyrone Mings, Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford.

Thursday’s game against Ireland will be played behind-closed-doors anyway because of the Covid pandemic.

But Ireland newcomer Idah said: “Black Lives Matter is something that everyone should be aware of.

“It’s a big thing for me and taking the knee is a big thing in football. It shows that everyone should try to end racism.

“I try to do as much as I can to stand against racism. I'm not sure what’s going to happen but that’s a big thing to do.

“I'm a big believer in ending racism and I'm sure that the whole team is as well. So it seems like we will take the knee.”

Ireland goalkeeper Darren Randolph is also willing to back such a stance from the Boys in Green.

He said: “It’s a situation that is not going to go away anytime soon. The George Floyd incident happened and there have been several incidents afterwards.

“The message still hasn’t sunk in. People haven’t been educated on it properly. I’m fully behind every athlete who wants to act and get behind the movement."

Randolph added: “I’ve seen a lot of stuff that has gone on in America. So I totally understand why they do what they do and it’s time to do something about it.”
