Adam Hills

Adam Hills's new show is called Cut Loose. The idea is "to say what I've always wanted to say onstage". It sounded promising - a new departure, perhaps, for a comedian whose primary achievement hitherto has been to make the middle of the road a very agreeable place to spend time. But there's nothing remotely no-holds-barred about this show: what Hills has always wanted to say varies little from what he's said before. If this is cut loose, I'd hate to see tied down.

We're in a world of cheerful Aussies and miserable Brits. That's not to say Hills doesn't deliver his predictable material with aplomb. He's famously convivial company - and nice to a fault. This is a comic who'll joke at your expense then apologise. You'd gladly introduce him to your mum, but inoffensiveness isn't the best qualification for a comic career.

You may not sympathise with Hills' excuse for being so apolitical - he professes to be ill-informed. But at least he's honest enough to admit it. Heart-on-sleeve avuncularity is one of his appealing characteristics. It's a perfectly pleasant hour, and a totally unsurprising one.
