Adam Gase says Jamal Adams wasn’t benched vs. Browns

Jets safety Jamal Adams thought he was being benched on Monday against the Browns, but Adam Gase didn’t look at it that way.

Adams was taken out of Monday’s contest late in the fourth quarter when the game was out of reach. He then went on WFAN the following day and said he was benched for committing back-to-back penalties. However, Gase thought Adams was being too aggressive and didn’t want him to get hurt.

“I thought he was getting fired up pretty good, and I clicked over (to the defensive coaches) and I was like, ‘Hey, we need to be careful here,'” Gase said. “I was worried that something bad was going to happen, we need him for the next week. They were smart and they pulled him off. I said, ‘Just calm him down,’ and then we were off the field.”

Adams was really upset following Monday’s game. He’s not one who comes off the field often. In fact, he had only missed 14 snaps in his entire career before missing five on Monday.

It’s easy to understand where Gase was coming from. He lost Avery Williamson for the season because he left him in too long in the preseason. In the case of Adams, it was a regular season game, but the Jets had no chance of coming back.

The Jets don’t have a lot of bodies as is at the moment. Losing Adams would have been catastrophic and would’ve raised questions as to why he was in the game.
