The question was simple.
Why should people have confidence that Adam Gase is the right guy for the Jets?
Gase, given an opportunity to win over the segment of fans unhappy with his 1-5 start, didn’t have much to say, though. He entertained the question, but he hardly answered it.
“Right now, I’m the one in position to do this,” Gase said Wednesday, offering a non-answer. “I’ve got a lot of experience doing this. I mean, I don’t have to sell my job. This is what I do.”
As usual, the Jets head coach expressed a hint of opposition to the question. What he didn’t do was give himself a ringing endorsement.
Gase was brought in to take Sam Darnold to the next level, but after Darnold’s performance in Week 7, the coach is now responsible for rebuilding his quarterback’s confidence.
New York was flat-out embarrassed on Monday Night Football. The Jets were shutout by the New England Patriots, 33-0, and Darnold had the worst performance of his career. He threw four interceptions, lost a fumble and recorded a 3.7 QBR.
On Tuesday, Gase pointed the finger at himself for the team’s struggles. The offense is dead last in the NFL in nearly every category.
“Obviously, I haven’t found the formula yet to make us anything close to consistent,” Gase said.
Time will tell if Gase is the right man for the job, but so far the results don’t exactly bode well for the Jets’ first-year head coach.
However, he has the opportunity to right the ship after a 1-5 start. Gang Green has an easy remaining schedule, but it starts with being underdogs on the road in Jacksonville.
