For the first time in the NFL’s 100 seasons, four rookie head coaches are still looking for their first win as we head into Week 5.
Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury, Bengals coach Zac Taylor, Broncos coach Vic Fangio and Dolphins coach Brian Flores have failed to win a single game in their first four tries. Kingsbury interviewed with the Jets, but he had his eyes set on Arizona and Gang Green ultimately ended up with Adam Gase.
While Gase isn’t a first-year head coach, it’s his first year with the Jets and he is in the same boat as the four listed above.
The Jets head coach has not won an NFL game since December 2018, in which his Miami Dolphins won on a last-second miracle.
Gase showed flashes of his offensive mind in preseason and training camp but has run a mostly conservative offense in the early going of the 2019 season. The Jets are on quarterback No. 3 and their offensive line is a disaster, but Gase hasn’t shown much creativity to helped his limited pieces.
Gase has failed to adapt to his defective personnel and is making similar mistakes that he made over the previous three seasons in Miami. While he’s not a rookie head coach, he’s certainly looked the part. There’s a level of understanding, but a lot less leniency when dealing with impatient Jets fans who thought the team would be more competitive than they’ve appeared over the past eight quarters.
Gase is currently 23-29 all-time as a head coach and with the Eagles, Cowboys and Patriots all on the upcoming schedule, it doesn’t appear that he will be getting closer to the .500 mark anytime soon.
Gase has to learn from own his mistakes before he falls into the footsteps of his predecessors. He failed in Miami and so far is similarly running the Jets. If things don’t change soon, he could be the one to fall on the sword. He and Joe Douglas are close friends, but ultimately the decision lies in the hands of Christopher Johnson.
