Adam Engel, White Sox nearly complete amazing comeback, end up falling to Indians, 9-7

CHICAGO _ Disaster struck early for Dylan Covey in a four-run, 28-pitch first inning, capped by Melky Cabrera's three-run home run, as the White Sox lost the series finale, 9-7, to the Indians on Sunday despite a furious rally over the eighth and ninth innings.

The Indians tacked on two more runs in the second, and Covey exited the next frame when he couldn't quite land a pair of low fastballs and walked Greg Allen with two outs. Hector Santiago relieved him and struck out Erik Gonzalez to get out of the innings.

All told, Covey gave up seven hits, six earned runs and two walks and struck out three over 2 2/3 innings.

Jason Kipnis and Yandy Diaz went back-to-back with RBIs in the second and eighth innings to help run up the score to a rout.

The Sox got a couple of highlight moments from center fielder Adam Engel, the first a leaping grab at the wall in the eighth inning, then in the bottom of the frame, he hit a 396-foot shot to center off Adam Cimber, who replaced starter Carlos Carrasco.

That started a late-inning rally for the Sox. Two batters after Engel, Yolmer Sanchez launched his own shot to center.

Back-to-back-to-back RBI singles by Yoan Moncada, Tim Anderson and Kevan Smith drew the Sox within 9-5 and really got the crowd revved up at Guaranteed Rate Field. Engel sparked more cheers with a two-run triple on a line drive center fielder Greg Allen couldn't handle.

But any hopes for a miraculous comeback ended when Cody Allen struck out Nick Delmonico and Sanchez to end the game.
