Adam Collard's love rat lows - 'cheating, gaslighting' and Women's Aid warning

As far as explosive Love Island moments go, the return of series four love rat Adam Collard this summer has got to be up there.

Fresh from the boys running wild at Casa Amor, the girls' jaws hit the floor when the gym hunk sauntered in unannounced.

Making it clear he's got no qualms with stepping on toes, Adam - who turns 27 today - immediately set about getting to know the island girls before setting his sights on paramedic Paige Thorne.

Still reeling for Jacques O'Neill's Casa antics, Paige was loving life and happily flirted with Adam by the side of the pool, where she told him that after Jacques' behaviour, she would be open to getting to know him.

Adam laid it on thick, hinting that Jacques would struggle to stay loyal once villa life was over, and insisted he was a safer bet because he'd already been through it.

Jacques then sensationally quit, leaving Paige and Adam free to couple up and graduate from the show as an item. And so it stayed until footage of Adam looking cosy with a woman on a night out sparked a chain of events that ended their romance.

While Adam denied cheating, insisting his ex knows 'the truth', it's not the first broken heart he's left in his wake...

Love Island 'gaslighting'

Within days of entering as a bombshell, Adam moved on from Kendall Knight to Rosie Williams, who broke down in tears when he started flirting with Megan Barton Hanson and accused her of being 'clingy'.

Adam's head then turned again for Zara McDermott, leaving Rosie devastated.

But when she voiced her hurt, he suggested that she was overreacting and claimed her jealousy had 'pushed him away'.

During a heartbreaking showdown, Rosie told a smirking Adam: "Do you think this is all funny? Is this a big game to you? I don't think you have any idea how much you've really hurt me and really upset me."

Adam later defended himself on Aftersun, insisting that his smirk had been taken out of context.

"The conversation was a lot longer than what was obviously on the episode and it was massively cut down. I wasn't laughing at Rosie being upset," he said.

"It was almost because the conversation had gone on for so long. I didn't say one word because I couldn't get a word in edgeways. She was speaking at me, I didn't get a chance to defend myself or explain the situation. I was almost laughing as in I can't even speak or get a word in."

Nevertheless, Women's Aid issued a warning following the episode, accusing Adam of displaying clear signs of 'gaslighting and emotional abuse'.

The statement read: "There are clear warning signs in Adam's behaviour. In a relationship, a partner questioning your memory of events, trivialising your thoughts or feelings, and turning things around to blame you can be part of pattern of gaslighting and emotional abuse.

"Last night, Rosie called out Adam's unacceptable behaviour on the show. We ask viewers to join her in recognising unhealthy behaviour in relationships and speaking out against all forms of domestic abuse – emotional as well as physical.

"It is only when we make a stand together against abuse in relationships that we will see attitudes change and an end to domestic abuse."

And when he returned for the most recent series, the charity slammed the move, and urged ITV bosses to reconsider.

"In the 2018 series of Love Island, we saw Rosie rightly call out Adam for his unacceptable behaviour, which included gaslighting and emotional abuse," they said.

"We hope that ITV recognise how serious this issue is and that it must be learned from, considering they have asked Adam to return to the show.

"Love Island is watched by many young people and we know what a huge influence it has.

"Producers must make sure there is support for contestants throughout, and intervene if relationships become unhealthy or abusive."

Casa capers

Zara McDermott was absolutely gutted when the boys voted her off Love Island, bringing to a swift close her romance with Adam.

The 21-year-old government worker begged him to leave with her before vowing to wait for him on the outside.

But Adam wasted no time moving on with new 'distraction', Casa Amor girl Darylle Sargeant, just a day later.

When Darylle asked whether he'd still be with Zara if she was in the villa, he hinted that his head would have been turned.

"I think now looking at you, it would have been a very hard decision," he smoothly told Darylle.

"I haven't got a bad word to say about Zara. But I feel a lot more comfortable with you straightaway than with anyone else here," he added before they snogged for the first time.

However, once back at the main villa, he dumped Darylle amid his continuing feelings for Zara, who he went on to date for eight months on the outside.

Cheating claims

Paige and Adam lasted just two months amid cheating rumours sparked by footage of Adam with his arm wrapped around another woman on a night out. Paige subsequently removed all traces of him from her social media page.

The gym owner was also pictured cosying up to another girl at a pool party in Ibiza before heading to Bali just days after their split, where it was claimed that he kissed a mystery woman.

And Paige said she had seen more video evidence of Adam allegedly being unfaithful.

Speaking on the Saving Grave podcast, Paige said: "I'm single – living my best life. No I'm kidding, it's been a really s**t time."

She added: "It's not just that video. There are other videos that people don't know about of different people, on the same night, in different locations.

"At first, I was like, nah do you know what? It's just an arm. I get that people get flirty. There’s nothing to it. If I’m in the club and a guy puts his arm around me, is it cheating? No.

"And then these other videos came out and I'm just like, oh. Oh, I can't justify this."

She added that there is no chance the pair can work through their differences, saying: "I mean, would you? Would you get back with someone like that? The videos speak for themselves. The ones everyone has seen and the ones only I've seen."

For Adam's part, he denied cheating and told The Sun that Paige knows what really went on.

"I think she knows the truth about all of that, and to be honest I'm not bothered about anyone's opinion, only hers," he said.

He added: "I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for her. She's great, so as long as she knows all of that."
