Kia: “You Make Us Make Better Cars” (Starts at 00:06) – UK
This 60-second film advertising Kia is a perfect demonstration of what can be achieved when a director and an editor are working in perfect harmony though, for all Ad break knows, director Joanna Bailey and editor Melanie Anne Oliver were actually punching each other throughout … you know what these creative types are like. Either way, the outcome is incredibly impressive and stands a chance of waking up the British public to the charms of the Kia … whatever they may be.

Weetabix: “Alphabet” (Starts at 01:10) – UK
If you’re delighted by silliness, then there’s a good chance you’ll like this film highlighting an initiative from Weetabix which encourages punters to send in pictures of their ‘Weetabuddies’. Since the faces in the ad are made up using pieces of fruit, we assume they’re hoping to encourage youngsters to healthily adorn their daily wheaty-biscuits. In any case, the use of animated voices and well-timed close-ups cleverly brings these characters to life and makes sure we pay attention during the ad break.

Virgin Atlantic: “The Idea” (Starts at 01:34) – UK
This advert appears to take it for granted that all airlines are pretty much equal if you’re among the privileged few who get to turn left once you’re onboard. Instead of banging on about comfortable beds, impeccable service and staff who know what you need before you do … this concentrates instead on what it says about you if you choose to fly with this airline. Have you got what it takes to fly Virgin Atlantic?

VW Up: “Eye Surgery” (Starts at 02:58) – UK
The latest advert in VW’s ‘you get what you pay for’ campaign features a bespectacled woman who wants laser eye surgery but isn’t keen on paying more for the safest option. As she books her appointment, the receptionist carefully explains the difference but the doddery equipment speaks for itself with the patient – beautifully cast – remaining steadfastly and dangerously in denial.

Royal Navy: “Made in the Royal Navy” (Starts at 03:32) – UK
A lot of the advertising at this time of year seems to reflect our tendency to start the new year with an intention to improve our lives. We stop drinking and smoking, we start dieting and we begin perusing the online stocks of other eager singletons looking for love. And – for some – it’s an opportunity to consider a real sea-change (if you’ll forgive the pun) and join the navy. Any restless youngster considering this option might be persuaded after watching this powerful recruitment film which is thankfully devoid of machismo.
