Actress Jodie Turner-Smith slams monarchy for not taking Meghan Markle opportunity

Actress Jodie Turner-Smith has spoken out against the Royal family saying they have missed a huge chance to refresh their reputation.

The actress, who is playing Anne Boleyn in the new Channel 5 series of the same name, says the monarchy isn’t changing ‘quickly enough’.

When asked by The Telegraph whether the Duchess of Sussex could have been the one to modernise the Royals, she replied: "I think that Meghan could have been that."

The actress went on to say: "It was a terrible missed opportunity, the way in which it was not allowed to be something that really modernises that institution, and to change it to something for the better. I think that’s why there’s dysfunction there."

Since their explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey in April - in which Meghan and Harry revealed there had been discussions within the royal household about what colour Archie's skin might be - Britain's most famous family has been left reeling.

Prince Charles was ‘knocked to the ground with several punches’ following his son's bombshell interview with the chat show host, it's been claimed.

Harry told Oprah there was a 'lot of hurt' between him and his father.

In her own portrayal of the British monarchy, actress Jodie recently told British Vogue : "I loved the script, and the humanity of the person at the centre of it.

"It resonated with me as a story about motherhood, having just had my own child, and it highlights the many ways in which female bodies were policed and politicised, and still are.

"In Anne’s case, whether her body worked according to the patriarchy’s demands was literally a matter of survival… There’s so much about her story that feels modern," she added.

"It’s one I can relate to as a Black woman, and it shows how little has changed in terms of our desire to tear down powerful women, to not let them live in their truth."
