Actress Emma Watson Has Been Banned From Driving In The UK After Being Caught Speeding

Harry Potter star, Emma Watson, has been slapped with a $2,146 (£1,044) fine and a six month driving ban after speeding in the UK.

The 35 year old — who’s taken a step back from acting in recent years to study at Oxford — was caught speeding in Banbury, England in July 2024. She was alleged to have been driving her blue Audi 61km/h (38 mph) in a 48km/h (30 mph) zone. Ooft.

Similar to the demerit point system in Australia, the UK courts can fine you and “endorse” points on your driving record. These can stay on your record anywhere from four to 11 years. If British drivers accumulate over 12 or more points in three years, they can be disqualified from driving.

According to BBC News, Watson already had nine (!) points on her licence before this latest incident.

While the actress and student didn’t show up to High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court herself this week, lawyer Mark Haslam said his client was “in a position to pay the fine”. You can say that again.

In a weird, witchy coincidence, another Harry Potter actress also lost her license for six months and was fined for speeding in the same court… on the very same day.

Zoe Wanamaker, who played Quidditch referee and Hogwarts coach Madam Hooch in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, was caught speeding in August 2024.

According to the BBC, the 76-year-old was driving at 74 km/h (46mph) in a 65 km/h (40mph) zone on the M4 in Newbury, Berkshire. Wanamaker was also fined $2,146 (£1,044). Her lawyer stated that the actress wasn’t asking for “special treatment” and accepted the fine.

Watson isn’t reported to be making any guest appearances in the new HBO TV adaption of the iconic wizard books. Her famous character, Hermione Granger, is set to be played by Arabella Stanton.

In the meantime, Watson will be continuing her creative writing degree at Oxford — and taking public transport for the rest of 2025.

I guess it really is ten points to Gryffindor after all.
