Actress Catherine Deneuve, 76, hospitalised after suffering 'mild stroke'

Actress Catherine Deneuve is in hospital recovering from a 'mild stroke', her family have revealed.

In a statement released through her agent, Deveuve's family say she would need time to recuperate but there had been no damage to her motor function.

Deneuve was an icon of French cinema in the 1960s, best known for her role in 1967's Belle de Jour.

She earned the nicknamed 'Ice Maiden' by critics because of her ice blonde locks and cool on screen prescence.

After the controversy surrounding Belle du Jour - which centred on a housewife turning to prostitution - Deneuve went on to enjoy a long and varied career in the film industry.

She starred as a vampire alongside David Bowie in The Hunger, 1983, and was also nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in 1993's Idochine.

Deneuve, 76, continues to make films and this year attended the Venice Film Festival earlier this year, with Hirokazu Kore-eda's Truth.

She sparked controversy in January 2018, when along with 99 other French women writers, performers and academics signed an open letter claiming the campaign against sexual harassment had become a 'witch hunt.'

However, Deneuve later apologised to anyone who might have been offended by the letter.
