Actor who plays Jamie in Normal People and castmates respond to hate from fans

Twitter was flooded with hatred for Fionn O’Shea’s character Jamie after RTÉ’s airing of the seventh and eight episodes of popular series Normal People.

Jamie, a friend of Marianne at Trinity College has a crush on her for a while before entering a relationship following her breakup with Connell.

Many fans berated the character with one saying he was the most hated tv personality since Game of Thrones' Joffrey.

O’Shea who plays Jamie in the series has taken the hate his character is receiving in stride and has shared a number of fan’s memes about the character.

O’Shea is well known outside of Normal People his roles in numerous films including the 2016 film,Handsome Devil.

Although his character in Normal People has made a bad impression on fans, castmates and director of Dating Amber, O’Shea’s newest film, have been quick to defend the actor’s character in real life.

Director David Freyne said: “Can we please take a moment to recognise the brilliance of Fionn O’Shea, who has given us the year's greatest villain in Jamie. PS. He's also really really.... really lovely in real life.”

Paul Mescal who plays leading man Connell alongside O’Shea in Normal People agreed, retweeting Freyne and adding: “Yes to all of this”.

His 'Dating Amber' co-star Lola Pettigrew shared the love as well, tweeting: “Can confirm he

is not only an exceptional actor but the best human being. He may play a villain but he is A SWEETHEART."
