Sylvester Stallone is now famous for playing tough action heroes in movies. But before he made it big, his life was really hard. When he was a kid, his parents split up when he was 11 years old. This was tough on young Stallone. His family moved around a lot because they did not have much money. This made it hard for him to make friends or feel settled anywhere.
When Stallone grew up, he wanted to become an actor, as per BrightSide. So he moved to New York City to chase his dream. But things did not go well at first. He went to one audition after another, and nobody wanted to hire him. To pay his bills, he had to take whatever jobs he could find. He cleaned animal cages at the Central Park Zoo. The money from these jobs was barely enough to survive. During all this struggle, he had one true friend by his side. That was his dog Butkus, a bullmastiff who meant everything to him.
Then things got even worse. Stallone ran out of money completely. He could not even buy food for himself or his dog anymore. So he made a choice that broke his heart. He took Butkus to a liquor store and tried to sell him. He put up a sign asking for $100, but a man only gave him $50. Stallone took the money because he had no other choice. Years later, he talked about how poor he was back then. He said he was “26, totally broke, going nowhere very fast, owned 2 pairs of pants that barely fit, and dreams of being successful were as far away as the sun.”
But Stallone never gave up on his acting dreams
One day in 1975, Stallone watched a boxing match on TV. The fight was between the famous Muhammad Ali and a fighter named Chuck Wepner who was not expected to win. But Wepner kept fighting and did not give up. This gave Stallone an idea. He went home and started writing a movie script about an underdog boxer who gets a chance to prove himself. He wrote the whole thing really fast.
People in Hollywood heard about his script and loved it. Different producers came to him with offers to buy it. Some offered him $75,000. Others went as high as $360,000. That was more money than Stallone had ever seen in his whole life. But there was one problem. The producers did not want Stallone to be in the movie. They wanted to hire a big movie star instead. Names like Robert Redford and Burt Reynolds were mentioned. But Stallone said no to all of them.
Sylvester Stallone was so broke he sold his wife’s jewelry and even his dog, yet he turned down $125,000 for Rocky (1976) because they would not let him star. A studio finally paid $35,000 and gave him the lead. That gamble made him a legend.

Even though he only had $106 in his bank account, Stallone refused to sell his script unless he could play the main character. He told his wife that he would rather live in a trailer in a swamp than give up on this chance. He knew that if someone else played Rocky and the movie became a hit, he would regret it for the rest of his life.
Finally, two producers named Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff agreed to let him star in the movie. But they could only give him a very small budget of about $1 million to make the whole film. Stallone did not care. He had his chance. The first thing he did after signing the deal was go look for the man who bought his dog. He stood outside that same liquor store for three days waiting.

When the man finally showed up with Butkus, Stallone begged to get his dog back. The man said no at first. He knew Stallone really wanted the dog, so he asked for a lot of money. In the end, Stallone paid $15,000 to get Butkus back. Like other heartwarming stories of loyalty between humans and their dogs, Butkus got to be in both Rocky and Rocky II. His name even appeared in the movie credits as Butkus Stallone.
Early in his career, Sylvester Stallone was so low on cash, he was forced to sell his dog, Butkus, for $40. When he sold the script for 'Rocky', he bought the dog back for $15K and gave him a role in the movie.

When Rocky came out in 1976, it was a huge hit. The movie made more than $225 million around the world. It won the Academy Award for Best Picture, which is the biggest honor a film can get. Stallone became a superstar almost overnight. All the Rocky movies together have made over $1.4 billion. Just as Stallone’s persistence paid off in ways he never expected, sometimes life throws unexpected curveballs that change everything.
